If you will be traveling long distances with a pet, make sure the pet is in good health and up-to-date on vaccines, especially the rabies vaccine. A health certificate is required if a pet will be traveling interstate. This is important to obtain if you are flying, and requires an examination by your veterinarian.
If you leave a pet at home when you travel, it is important to leave good contact information and an up-to-date rabies certificate so that caretakers can call a veterinarian in case of emergency.
When bringing animals to the veterinary hospital, always have dogs on a leash and cats in a carrier, no matter how well-behaved they are. (You do not know how your pet will react to any injuries it may have, or to other animals at the hospital.)
